No Message Alerts Problem on Nokia N95
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the alerts for text messages has mysteriously gone missing and completely stopped working.
The alert tone no longer sounded, the alert vibration no longer occurred, and worst of all there was no popup alert that says there’s a new text message.
However, if I went into the “Messages” area, my Inbox would clearly have a red “plus” symbol to indicate there is a new message, which I could go into it and read it as normal.
This is most annoying!
What I tried:
When the problem first occurred, my initial thought was to check the ringer, to ensure that wasn’t the problem. As it turns out, it wasn’t, and it was clearly far beyond that.
I backed up my data to my memory card, and re-flashed the phone to the latest possible update available to me which was v12.0.013, which was in fact the flash version I was already running.
I sent a test message to the phone, with all the default settings after the flash. It worked!
I restored my data from my memory card, but then it did not work…
There was a fix out there, there had to be. The phone was running a bit slow, so I figured it was down to the 2000+ text messages I had stored on there. I deleted them all. No fix.
What fixed it:
As it turns out, to fix this problem, that seems to occur when you have over 2000 text messages in your inbox, you need to first delete all the messages (by using the “mark all” option, then delete), and forcing a hard reset by removing the battery while the phone is switched on (and idle).
You MUST do both of these, else it doesn’t appear to fix the problem.
I hope that this problem is fixed in v20, and that T-Mobile UK will role it out soon!
Thanks to this post for the solution.

You don’t need to delete all you messages, I just deleted a couple of hundred and it worked :o)
Thank you so much!! Have spent over half an hour on the phone to T mobile trying to figure this all out and the final solution from them was going to be to go to a store and have my phone sent off for repair! This was my last attempt and it worked!!!
Can’t say a big enough thank you!
🙂
Thank you !! ive been trying to sort this out – grr – It’s all sorted now !!!!
Sweet, that worked! Its a beauty when you google something and all your wishes come true.
A thousand thank-yous! I was driving myself insane trying to fix this.
lol wish i found this out before i sent it off twice, total nightmare… Sent it off the first time for this and something else, they fixed the something else but not this, then i sent it off again for this reason and they sent it back unchanged. and nothing to say they even attempted to fix it, so a couple of hours on the phone screaming at some poor fella who had as much as a clue as i did, and he suggested to send it off again… lol… Out of bordom, decided to search it and see what comes up and they was the holy ground… Thank you so much.. Helped alot…

For those of you who don’t want to delete your messages you can transfer them to the “my folder” folder by doing mark all and then move to folder. So Glad I finally got this fixed as was driving me crazy so thanks

Wow, cheers for this info! My alert disappearing coincided with my 3 year old daughter dropping my phone down the stairs, but I suddenly thought ‘why is everything else working?!’. Came on here, and jobs a good ‘un! Brilliant!

http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/sms-cleaner
Hope this helps!
Brilliant. Worked for my US TMobile account, too (since they don’t service the N95 here, I couldn’t call Customer Service).
It also fixed the issue with my voice mail icon (which wouldn’t turn off, even though I didn’t have any new voice messages).
Great stuff!!!
lord thank you to however discovered this. it has such a lot of time and money as Telstra’s only advised was to pay to get it sent away and repaired or get a new phone. you are my hero. thank you.
Thanks for the help dude!
I was having this problem for some time now. Just move all the messages to a new folder and your problem will be fixed!
Thanks once again! 🙂
My Wife thinks I’m a genius.

Whoa! I thought my phone was broken for 4 months, and I was forced to buy a cheap Samsung fone just to have a “working” cellphone.
Now my phone is okay, THANK YOU!… :))
I noticed this problem a couple a days ago, googled it and found this post: it worked straight away.

Wow…. you just saved me from a hard reset man….
thank you very much… the phone just started ringing again 😀
the best part is that if i had sent the phone to the nokia service they would just do a firmware update, which either would result in loosing my data or having the same problem again after restoring my data from the back up
